Yesterday, I witnessed the two separate incidents where the mayor of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, and the former opposition leader Kizza Besigye were teargassed, roughened, dragged and arrested by police for inciting violence and holding an unsanctioned rally.
I have been following and watching how Ugandan politicians both from the ruling party NRM and the opposition act and basing on the research, I will say, there is lack of political maturity in their game of politics.
A leader like Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who was elected by people and the people expected much from him in organizing the city and building it to become a better place has disappointed many businessmen and Kampala residents, just because he is a political amateur who has fallen in the traps of president Museveni and the NRM. What Lukwago has not realized is that NRM wants him to be in what he is now, they want to disorganize him politically and he will be in fighting with police, cases in court and at the end of his term nothing he would have done for people and yet people did not elect him to fight political wars.
Today, if you carry polls on who has worked for people in Kampala City between Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Kampala City council director Jennifer Musisi, you will find that people will say director Jennifer Musisi has worked. Roads, markets and parks and taxi parks are being constructed without Lord Mayor’s efforts.
All political leaders and those seeking to become politicians should know that people on the ground, needs to see when their lives are socially and economically stable.
I feel so sick when politicians come to my home districts seeking for votes and they start telling us the man (president Museveni) is going without showing us the plan how the man is going. And then after elections, you see the man coming back again.
President Museveni has used this political immaturity of Ugandan politicians to cling on power. When president Museveni comes and lies Ugandans that “I will construct roads, factories, industries , every Ugandan family will earn 20 million per year by 2017, and Uganda will be a middle income Country by 2040” etc , earns him popularity among people because is what they dream of . They (people) want to be in a better place.
The only way president Museveni can be defeated is when his rivals come out and out show that they can do better for Ugandans than him (president Museveni) and also exposing more about his weaknesses in his government.
NRM and all political parties in Uganda should know that our political opponents are not our enemies. It is just because they are on another side and we are on this side but we are all elected to serve our people.
The Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago should agree to work with NRM and serve his people if NRM is doing what is good for his people who elected him.
The political immaturity has done more than harm to our people. People in the Karamoja region are dying of hunger , eating grass as food just because their leaders has not done enough to tell the government that there is disaster in this regions. Political differences in Uganda have killed the whole system and people are not being helped because they belong to different parties.
Many Ugandan politicians talk because they want to be heard and written in newspapers but they don’t talk because they want to help people.
